Community Service

In order to ensure sustainability, build capacity, expand the program, and provide systemic change, we have developed extensive and diverse community resources and collaborations with a broad range of corporate, foundation, non-profit, individual and religious support.

For instance:

  • SAS collaborates with other academic programs that include: Capital District YMCA Black and Latino Achievers program; Two-Together elementary reading program; Schenectady’s Promise and Academic Talent Search. These programs give our students exposure to college campuses and to community programs where they are able to give back to others.

  • Black and Latino Achievers is a nationally recognized program begun in Harlem, New York, to help bring successful Black professionals together with youth to foster success in the African-American community. SAS helps the YMCA Black and Latino Achievers program provide PSAT/SAT training to their students through a collaboration developed with Bryant and Stratton College. This collaboration was initially designed to provide Sponsor-A-Scholar students free PSAT/SAT training. When Bryant and Stratton had a minimum number of paying students for their PSAT/SAT training program, we would send additional students free of charge. This has since expanded to include the Black and Latino Achievers program as a result of the synergy between the three groups.

  • SAS work with the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants resulted in the initiation of a one week academic program at The College of Saint Rose, in Albany, New York. Eight students took advantage of the opportunity to participate in a program designed to increase the population of minority students in the Accounting field. Through the Mayor of Albany's Summer Employment Program, it offered 20 hours of academics, centered on various business issues, and exposed the students to a number of professionals in the field of Education, Business and Certified Public Accounting. They also visited three colleges, including Siena College, The College of Saint Rose and The University at Albany. They participated in a five week internship at various local CPA firms, where they were mentored by Accounting Professionals. The City of Albany work program provided six full weeks of pay for the students participation in this program.

  • SAS students helped plant trees donated to the Community Gardens program to beautify Troy, New York and improve the quality of life for all residents. This helped our students learn an appreciation for their community and develop a sense of empowerment to face and address issues that undermine the fabric of their communities.
